I just learnt about the concept of a wedding registry. I had heard about wish lists and seen lists of gifts that kids wanted for Christmas etc in US. Recently, I heard about a wedding registry where the couple to be married put up a list of presents they want (usually pointing to the model/color/size of products in specific stores). People pick a gift from the list and cross off that item.

Sounds terribly non-Indian, doesn’t it. That is what I thought. Ofcourse from a practical point of view, it is nice that you don’t end up getting 4 copies of Star Trek!

One of those cultural things... First you shake your head then you move along :-)

Hey, does this work? Try it out and let me know. Don't pass me the list, just tell me how it went. And then maybe we can all vote for polygamy.

Just heard about this recently. I am thinking of the best way to suggest starting it here. I should find a prospective couple now.

@Shiv, what has the environment done to you? :-)
It just works ...

@Cris, "here" meaning India? Some of it exists in India especially among young couples who plan their own wedding. But since most of the time the wedding is something that parents take care of, the couple doesn't have much of a say in what they want .... mostly.

As an American, even I sometimes think the use of a registry is questionable. One good thing is if you don't know the people you're not wasting money or someone else's space. Then again guests have the option of not using the registry also. At our wedding some did not use the registry- as we got plenty of crystal items!!

Hey Pooja,

It's not just for weddings, people do the registry thing when they are expecting a baby, when the baby's going to hit a birthday, when they are having a birthday etc.

Kinda weird. But obviously very practical. Of course you have the odd person who only scans very expensive items at a store. That's gonna result in a lot of goodwill towards her at her baby shower - yeah right! :-)
