Linux is facing competition! Not from Microsoft. But from Sun Microsystems.

Sun Solaris 10, the latest version of the well-established Solaris Operating System is all set for release. And guess what? It is going to be FREE!

Sun's standpoint: “Why would anybody go for Linux — paid or free — developed by a dispersed community, when a validated version of Unix is available free?”

This might not kill Linux given its huge following. But then, now it would make Linux fanatics eat their words that they were against paying for software and would embrace anything that is open and free.

Of course, at the moment Sun Microsystems hasn't opened the Solaris source code and are following what Red Hat did with its version of Linux. But it definetely would be a big blow for the enterprise penguin.
