What is NetShortcut ?

NS is a small command line like utility for windows. Its commands are configured into a rules file. New commands can be added by making additions to the rules file. The above is a screen shot of Netshortcut.

What kind of commands ?

- NS commands can launch applications (the configuration language is flexible, so it offers more power than the 'Run' prompt)
- Issue web searches, for example one can search google, yahoo etc from the NS command line.
- Login into mail sites from the command line... the advantage here is that you need not visit the homepage of the mail site to do your login... all from your little NS prompt.

Notes to the New User

Please go through the readme file in the NS download archive. If all this seems rather boring to you, it wont be after you try it out a few times.

NS is a time saving application. Netshortcut doesn't let you do anything that you couldn't do otherwise. One thing that is essential to using NS is to please setup a desktop shortcut to the ns executable. Give the shortcut a keyboard shortcut to invoke it easily. Also make sure that the working directory of the desktop shortcut is set to the folder where the archive was extracted.

Installation

Extract the files in the archive. Run the executable netshortcut.exe  :)
Do make sure that the current folder where application is run is same as the directory where it was extracted.

Installation of New Rules file

Extract the rules file into the same folder where NS was previously extracted thus replacing the old files with the new ones. If you made any changes to the existing rules file, you may want to copy the changes into the new rules files before you lose the old one.

For who ?

I would say this is a cool addon for the guys who like the keyboard.. esp if you like doing things fast without having to learn too many new things. the old command prompt guys, net junkies... anyone with a eye for wanting to control their environment.
do check out that 'more about commands' link for the a listing of the commands.
